Bu tez çalışmasında, fantastik ve sürrealizm akımları, bir görsel anlatım dili olan illüstrasyonla tanım, tarihi gelişim süreçleri ve birbirleriyle olan etkileşimleri açısından incelenmiştir. Çalışma dört ana bölüm ve yapılan proje uygulaması konusu için hazırlanmış olan bölüm dahil olmak üzere toplamda beş bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk üç bölüm fantastik, sürrealizm ve illüstrasyonu ayrı ayrı ele almaktadır. Bu bölümlerde tanımlamaları, tarihi gelişim süreçleri, sahip oldukları özellikler, varsa türler gibi konuları detaylı bir şekilde inceleyen ara başlıklar ve bilgiler yer almaktadır. Dördüncü bölümde ise konular arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Öncelikle fantastik ve illüstrasyon, daha sonra sürrealizm ve illüstrasyon arasındaki ilişki incelenmiş, bu alanda çalışmalar üretmiş çeşitli illüstratör ve tasarımcıların çalışmaları örnek olarak gösterilerek tasarımları ve üslupları hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Son olarak ise üçünün beraber ilişkileri üzerinde durulmuştur. İllüstrasyonda görsel algının ne gibi etkileri olduğundan, fantastik ve sürrealizm akımlarının bu konuda hangi noktada durduklarından ve insanların psikolojilerinde ne gibi yansımalar oluşturduklarının üzerinde durulmuştur. Fantastik, sürrealizm ve illüstrasyonun görsel algıdaki yeri, psikoloji ve sosyoloji açısından etkili olabilmesi için ne gibi etkenlere dikkat edilmesi gerektiği konusunun önemi üzerinde durulmuştur. Proje uygulama konusu ve yapılan çalışma hakkında bilgilerin yer aldığı kısım ise beşinci bölümdür. Bu bölümde 150. yılı olması nedeniyle seçilen ‘Alice Harikalar Diyarında’ kitabı ve yazarı hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Hikayenin tarihi, yazar tarafından oluşum süreçleri, ne gibi mesajlar barındırdığı hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Hikayedeki başlıca karakterler hakkında bilgiler verilmiş ve tanıtılmıştır. Daha sonra ise kitabın ilk illüstrasyonlarını yapan Sir John Tenniel’den başlayarak günümüze kadar Alice kitapları için yapılmış farklı anlayışlardaki illüstrasyon örnekleri gösterilmiştir.

In this thesis, fantastic and surrealist movement is being examined in terms of their definition through illustration as a visual language, their progress through out history as well as their interaction between one another. The research comprises five chapters, where four of them constitute as the main chapters as well as one which includes information for the visual implementation of the project. The first three chapters undertake fantasy, surrealism and illustration on each chapter. Each chapter includes information and captions that questions the historical progress processes, their specialities and sorts if any through a deeper approach. In the fourth chapter ,the relation between subjects are examined. Primarly the relation between fantasy and illustration and than surrealism and illustration is examined. Also works of various illustrators and designers who produced their works under this field has been placed as examples and information provided for the related works and their style. Last but not least the interaction of these three movements are mentioned. The effect of the visual perception been pointed out on the illustrations, at what point does fantastic and surrealist movements stand for and what their reflecitons create on human psycology. Further more, the position of illustration, fantasy and surrealism on the visulal perception, whose factors has to be considered from psycological and sociological point of view. The fifth chapter includes the theme of the visual implementation and information for the project. In this section there is information about the author and the book titled “Alice in Wonderland” which is selected due to it’s 150th anniversary. Historical information of the story, the creation stages of the author and hidden messages are undertaken within this section. There is also the introduction and information of the characters within the story. Last but not least, various examples of works created under different examples of illustrations made upto date by various illustrators as well as Sir John Tenniel who has made the original illustrations of the book has been shown within this chapter.
