The "ordinary" existence of an upper middle class family is shattered with the death of the older son and the struggle of the younger son against guilt and suicide.

Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) ve Calvin (Donald Sutherland) oğulları Conrad (Timothy Hutton) ile yaşayan bir ailedirler.Büyük oğullarını bir tekne kazasında kaybetmişlerdir ve zor günler yaşamaktadırlar.Conrad bu ölümden kendisini sorumlu tutmaktadır.Bu zor günlerde onu ayakta tutan tek şey ise psikiyatristidir.
