Gilbert Grape is the eldest son in a dysfunctional family: his father committed suicide and his overweight mother hasn't left the house in seven years. Gilbert has assumed the role of "father" especially to his retarded brother Arnie and is almost overwhelmed with his responsibilites and the demands of his mother when a young woman named Becky comes to town, changes his outlook, and helps him deal with his mother and his father's suicide.
