After spending years alone in th terrible prison, the Bastille, the gentle Dr. Manette is set free. He is a broken, old man, unable to remember his life before prison. Fortunately his daughter, Lucie, takes him away from the hardship and danger of Paris to the safety of London. Here they make anew life together. Dr. Manette slowly recovers and Lucie marries aFrenchman who has also come to live in England. However, when the revolution comes, all three of them find that their links with France are not broken, and they go back-with tragic results.
