Eight-year-old Maria and her history professor mother embark on an ocean cruise from Portugal to Bombay, India. Three mysterious and glamorous women board the ship at different ports. The captain of the ship invites the three women to dinner at his table, and they all speak in their own languages for the better part of the conversation. After the three women board, the picturesque journey begins to grow in tension and complexity.
