摘要:
Although technological advances, such as improved irrigation systems and crop varieties, have enhanced productivity, agriculture remains vulnerable to unfavorable changes in climate. Thus, weak monsoon rains in 1987 caused large shortfalls in food production in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan; while persistent droughts in the 1980s reduced food production in widespread areas of Africa. International trade in grain and other products was affected thereby. These examples emphasize the close links between agriculture and climate, the international nature of food trade and food security, and the need to consider the potential impacts of climate change in an interactive global context. The symposium whose results are published herein was held as part of the annual meetings of the ASA, CSSA, and SSSA, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in November, 1992. It was sponsored by Division A-3 (Agroclimatology and Agronomic Modeling) and Division A-6 (International Agronomy). The symposium consisted of invited and contributed papers on the potential impacts of climate change on crop production, and on related topics. The symposium included studies from various countries representing every continent.
